Auxiliary Online Member Training Website Has Moved!

The following is a message from USCG Auxiliary - RIM:

The member-training website known as the "U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Virtual Classroom" has moved to a new location, and is now called the "Coast Guard Auxiliary – Online Classroom". The new link (URL) to the Online Classroom is http://classroom.cgaux.org. Members, member training officers, and unit webmasters should change all bookmarks, links, or other references to the old Virtual Classroom to the new site and address.

All courses previously available in the Virtual Classroom should immediately be available at the new Online Classroom. Old user accounts and course completion history have been retired, as the new site uses automatically provides members with new and permanent accounts based upon the same Member Zone Credentials used for AuxDirectory, NTC, Webforms, etc.

All Auxiliary members are encouraged to use the new Online Classroom. Support is available via the National Help Desk at http://help.cgaux.org.

Members should note that the on-hold "Auxiliary Mandated Training Program" courses as most recently referenced in ALAUX 011/11 ("Suicide Prevention", "Privacy Awareness", et. al.) will not be available on this new platform.

Elected leaders: please forward this alert to your members, or refer them to the "What's New!" on the National Website (cgaux.org).

SUBJECT: PHASE 2 - FINAL DISTRIBUTION OF EXCESS UNIFORMS INVENTORIED AT ANSC (AU

From: The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary - National Department of Human Resources

5/15/2012

To: Division Commanders and Flotilla Commanders

We are beginning the 2ND and FINAL phase of distribution for the Coast Guard donated
Uniforms (ODU TUCKED and other) to the CGAuxA. The Chief Director has authorized the 2nd
distribution for May 2012 through Auxiliary volunteers in supporting the distribution.

Due to the water damage at ANSC, there are some uniform items that have been damaged due
to water that the Inventory Sheet does not reflect. First come first serve and there will be no
back orders. For the ODU SHORTS listed at the bottom of the sheet, please note that if your
Sector "does not authorize the wear," DO NOT ORDER.

Division Commanders: Attached are 2 Inventory Spreadsheets. Please carefully have your FC
poll your members. Please send your FC the Flotilla Spreadsheet. The Chain of Leadership to
follow is the FC sends to the member their Flotilla Spreadsheet and when the FC has the Flotilla
tally, they send the Flotilla Spreadsheet total tally to the DCDR and the DCDR in turn sends me
one completed Division Spreadsheet, listing Unit, EMPLID, Name, Ship to address, Email and
Phone Number(s). I will return your Division Spreadsheet if not in EXCEL file format, or
completed properly. Please give this your prompt attention. Send to me; Director of Human
Resources (DIR‐H) Joseph O'Leary at my listed email.

Again, since stock is limited to the numbers currently on‐hand, less water damaged items we
have no way of knowing until we open cartons, Division orders will be filled on a First In First
Out basis. The order spreadsheet returned with the shipments will be annotated "NIS" for items
no longer available at the time the order is processed. If you do not see your size listed, we
suggest you go for a size upward if available.

Update: Coast Guard Suspends Search, Still No Sign Of Missing Boater

Madison, Guilford, East Haven, Branford, West Haven fire departments among shoreline emergency response teams that aided in search Friday night after call came in from distressed boater in West Haven. USCG Cutter Chinook, Falcon Jet search as well.

Update as of 12:10 p.m.

The Coast Guard just sent a new press release announcing the search has been suspended because "rescue crews were unable to locate any signs of distress this morning. The search was suspended at approximately 10 a.m. after Coast Guard air and boat crews along with local agencies, searched throughout the night and into the morning and were unable to find any debris."

Update as of 11 a.m. Saturday:

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound station in New Haven reports that the HU-25 Falcon Jet, a medium-range surveillance fixed-wing aircraft used to perform search and rescue, has completed a sweep of Long Island Sound in the area where a boater was reported missing Friday night.

A Coast Guard dispatcher said there is still no sign of the missing boater and that Coast Guard officials are meeting to assess the situation and determine next steps.

The Falcon Jet was flown in from the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod (ASCC), at the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod, to help with the search, after search efforts by local fire department rescue boats, along with a Coast Guard helicopter and a Coast Guard cutter from the New London base were not able to find the missing boater, who called in a distress signal Friday night.

Coast Guard Still Searching For Boater Who Abandoned Ship After Hitting A Rock

Madison, Guilford, East Haven, Branford, West Haven fire departments among shoreline emergency response teams that aided in search Friday night after call came in from distressed boater in West Haven. USCG Cutter Chinook still searching. Jet en route.

As of 5:20 a.m. today, the U.S. Coast Guard was still searching for a boater who called in seeking help Friday night after his boat hit a rock and started taking on water.

A dispatcher from the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound stationed in New Haven said initial reports indicate that one adult male was on board, and that he reported striking a reef in Long Island Sound near Chick's Drive In in West Haven, which is off of Beach Street near Morse Park in West Haven.

The dispatcher said fire departments from Madison, Guilford, East Haven, Branford, and West Haven initially responded to the call, which came in around 10:49 p.m. Friday.

"We [the Coast Guard] are still currently searching," he said Saturday morning. "As far as we know it was one adult male. He didn't give us a whole lot of information. He said he struck a reef off of Chick's Drive In in West Haven, he was taking on water, he was shooting off flares and abandoning ship."

The dispatcher said the U.S. Coast Guard a helicopter did a search Friday night and that the USCG's 87-foot patrol boat headquartered in New London, the Coast Guard Cutter Chinook is currently searching. A Coast Guard jet from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod (ASCC), located at the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod, is en route to help with the search.

Policy Regarding Requesting and Conducting Qualification Examiner Check Rides

With the surface patrol season now in full swing, all crew are reminded of the policy regarding QE Check Rides and are asked to comply with same. Below, this policy is outlined so as to eliminate confusion and facilitate a smooth qualification and re-qualification process.

1-      Beginning with the 2012 season, all currency maintenance check rides must be completed by 01 October.  Initial qualification check rides must be complete by 01 November.

2-      The maximum number of personnel permitted for a currency maintenance sign-off session is the minimum required crew for that boat.  As an example, one coxswain and two crew on a 27-foot boat.

3-      A maximum of two boat crews can be checked during one day by one QE.  It is, however, highly recommended that a break be taken between sessions.

4-      When conducting initial qualifications, only one candidate should be assigned to one Qualification Examiner.

5-      Above all, crew fatigue standards must be maintained and safety must be paramount in all evolutions that we undertake.

6-      Paperwork supporting the QE request must be complete and supporting documents recorded in AUXDATA as shown in the candidate's individual training record before any QE assignment will be made.  (Required paperwork is defined in QE Checklist Sections A & B).

Fleet Week Uniform and Protocol

FLEET WEEK

Uniform and Protocol

UNIFORM:

The prescribed uniform for Fleet Week is Tropical Blue Long.  This consists of:

Short sleeve dress shirt with shoulder boards

V-neck tee shirt (tee shirt must not show)

Name tag, ribbons and devices

Long dress trousers (work trousers are not acceptable in the place of dress trousers)

Black plain toe dress shoes, and black socks

Combination Hat (white) or a Garrison Cap (blue).  Ball Caps are not authorized.

Only uniform outer wear is authorized, if needed.

ODU's are NOT authorized.

Hair must not touch the shirt collar.  If you have long hair it must be "up" or covered by your hat.  Neck chains, bracelets, or hair ornaments must not be visible.

Uniforms must be neat and clean.  Remember you are not only representing the Auxiliary, you are representing the U.S. Coast Guard.

You will stay covered while you are on duty in most cases.  Check with the Duty Officer that is in charge of your duty facility to find out if there are any areas that you are required to be uncovered.  Also inquire if there are any restricted areas on the ship.

SALUTE:

You are expected to render a proper hand salute when necessary.  When saluting raise your right hand from your side, up your buttons to your head.  The tips of your fingers will come to the brim of your Combination Hat.  With the Garrison Cap your fingers will come to the corner of your eye brow or the corner of your glasses if you should be wearing them.  Your arm should be straight from your elbow to the tips of your fingers, and your hand should be facing inward.

While standing, you will be at attention when you salute.  When advancing toward a Senior Officer, you will continue to walk, make eye contact, render a greeting and a hand salute.  You will hold your salute until it is returned by the Senior Officer.

When the National Anthem is played you will stand at attention, render a hand salute and face the Flag if it visible.  If the Flag is not visible you will face the music and render a hand salute.  If you are uncovered you will render a Breast salute.

When in uniform you are required to return a salute made by someone else in uniform. This is important to remember.  Most other branches of the military do not know who we are.

BOARDING A SHIP:

When boarding (embarking) a ship, you will stop at the top of the gangway and salute the U.S. Ensign at the stern of the ship.  Then turn and salute the Duty Officer and request permission to come aboard.  After permission has been granted, you will then board the ship.  If there is not a Duty Officer at the top of the gangway, you will still turn and salute the U.S. Ensign before boarding the ship.

When leaving the ship (debarking), request permission to leave the ship while saluting the Duty Officer.  When permission has been granted, turn to the stern of the ship and salute the U.S. Ensign; then debark.

PROTOCOL AND RANK:

When outdoors you will salute any Military Officer that has a higher rank than the stripes that signify the office you hold or have held (i.e., if your shoulder boards have two stripes, you will salute a military officer with two and a half or more stripes).  All Coast Guard and Navy Officers will wear shoulder boards.  All other military branches will not wear shoulder boards, but their color devices will be equivalent.  There is an old adage that says         "If in doubt, salute".

You will address all military members by their Rank (i.e., Seaman Jones, Petty Officer Smith, Chief Brown, Senior Chief Green or Master Chief Blue).  Warrant Officers will be addressed as "Mister".  All Commissioned Officers will be addressed by sir, ma'am or their rank.

IDENTFYING RANK:

SEAMAN - will wear one, two or three Slashes on their sleeves.

PETTY OFFICERS - will wear one, two of three chevrons with an eagle above.

CHIEF PETTY OFFICER - will wear three chevrons with an arch that extends above the chevrons and an eagle above the arch.

SENIOR CHIEF PETTY OFFICER - same as Chief with a star above the eagle.

MASTER CHIEF PETTY OFFICER - same as Chief with two stars above the eagle.

CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER - silver OR gold and blue bar collar device, blue and gold stripes on shoulder boards.

ENSIGN - single gold bar collar devices , one full stripe on sleeves or shoulder boards.

LIEUTENANT JUNIOR GRADE - single silver bar collar devices, one and a half full stripes on sleeves or shoulder boards.

LIEUTENANT – two silver bars on collar devices, two full stripes on sleeves or shoulder boards.

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER - gold leaf on collar devices, two and a half stripes on sleeves or shoulder boards.

COMMANDER - silver leaf on collar device, three stripes on sleeves or shoulder boards.

CAPTAIN - eagle on collar devices, four stripes on sleeves or shoulder boards.

REAR ADMIRAL (LH) - One star collar devices, one two inch sleeve stripe, solid gold shoulder boards

REAR ADMIRAL (UH) -  Two star collar devices, one two inch sleeve stripe plus one inch stripe, solid gold shoulder boards.

VICE ADMIRAL - Three star collar devices, one two inch stripe plus two one inch sleeve stripes, solid gold shoulder boards.

ADMIRAL (CG COMMANDANT) - Four star collar devices, one two inch stripe plus three one inch sleeve stripes, solid gold shoulder boards.

UNIFORM GUIDANCE:

Women's hair must not reach below the collar.  Hair in the front must not fall below the headgear when worn.  Earrings on women are authorized.  When worn, they must be plain gold, silver or pearl studs.  No more than one ring on each hand is permitted.  No rings on thumbs will be worn.

The skirt, while authorized, is impractical for ships tours. Women's shoes are plain toed oxfords, pumps or flats with no decoration or stitching.  Women will wear black socks or hosiery with oxfords and hosiery with pumps and flats.

Women may wear either the men's or women's shirts (except with SDB, where the women's shirt with plackert is worn to conceal the buttons that the man's tie would normally cover). Women may wear either gender shirt or trousers.

Mixing and matching gender specific shirts and trousers should not be done because of the conflicting "gig line" (The opening side of the shirt or coat and trousers should face the same way).  The wearer's belt buckle will follow the gig line.  Hand bags are authorized for women, and will be plain black, may have a shoulder strap and be no larger than 12 x 8 x 5.

SMOKING:

When in uniform, smoking should be done only in designated areas, whether on a military installation or a public place.  Cigarette butts should be disposed of properly.  If a container for cigarette butts is not available, they must be "Field Stripped".

To field strip a cigarette: Remove the tobacco from the filter and paper and discard the tobacco.  The tobacco is bio degradable.  Put the filter and paper in your pocket until it can be disposed of properly.  The filter and paper are garbage.
