Division 12 Interpreter Recognized for Aid Given to CG Sector Baltimore

    On Saturday, 02 JUN 2012 during 1SR's District meeting held at Station NY on Staten, Island, Auxiliarist Hany Salih of Flotilla 12-01 was recognized by the Director of Auxiliary CDR Christopher Zorman, COMO Harold Marschall and AUXLO Chief Troy Krotz for his Interpreter skills provided to the Commander of US Coast Guard Sector Baltimore.

   

    Captain M. P. O'Malley, Commander Coast Guard Sector Baltimore noted with pride and was pleased to commend Hany Salih of Division 12 Flotilla 01 for his performance of duty on February 22, 2012 while volunteering as an interpreter for US Coast Guard Sector Baltimore for the Port State Control inspection and subsequent pollution investigation aboard the M/V WADI ALARISH, an Egyptian flagged bulk carrier.

 

    Throughout the day, even while working in his civilian occupation, Auxiliarist Salih made himself readily available to assist investigators with the questioning of multiple Arabic-speaking crew members by providing telephonic translations. The immediate assistance and access to information allowed investigators to confirm the allegations made by a crew member of the engineering department regarding the possible illegal bypass of the vessel's pollution prevention equipment.

 

    Additionally, Auxiliarist Salih provided timely assistance for the translation of key crew member's written statements to determine inconsistencies with verbal statements and the identification of additional information relevant to the investigation. His verbal and written translations were critical components with regard to the alleging crew members's safety and removal from the vessel and in the development of the $110,000 civil penalty assessed against the company operating the M/V WADI ALARISH.

 

    Auxiliarist Hany Salih is commended for his outstanding performance of duty. By his meritorious service, he has upheld the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard and is hence forth authorized to wear the AUXILARY COMMANDANT'S LETTER of COMMENDATION ribbon bar.
